First American Cookbook on Record

This cornerstone of American cookery is the first cookbook of American authorship to be printed in the United States. Numerous recipes that adapt traditional dishes by substituting native American ingredients such as corn meal and squash are printed here for the first time, including "Indian Slapjack," "Johny Cake," and "Squash Pudding." Simmons's "Pompkin Pudding," baked in a crust, is the basis for the classic American pumpkin pie. Although this popular work was published in many editions, only four copies of the original edition are known to have survived.

Old Forts

Fort Smith National Historic Siteentrance sign at Visitor Center parking lot

In 1838, two years after Arkansas statehood, a second fort was established at Fort Smith. Major buildings included two officer's quarters, a barracks, a commissary, and a quartermaster storehouse, all enclosed by a stone wall.

This postcard contains misinformation. It states the fort was built in 1830, not 1838. It says it was destroyed during the Civil War. Again, this is not true. The fort was garrisoned until 1871.

The stone wall that surrounded the fort remained in place through the federal court era and was not removed until 1897

map of Indian Removal routes        All five of the southeastern tribes forcibly removed on the Trail of Tears had routes that went through Fort Smith, Arkansas. Those that were removed by water went on the Arkansas River and from Fort Smith they crossed the river and entered Indian Territory. Foto above ^   The only known image of Judge Parker in his courtroom is this one from the federal courthouse on Sixth Street which dates from the 1890s. There are no photographs of the courtroom located in the former military barracks

Old Fort Parker ,Texas

Old Fort Parker State Historical Park, a 37.5-acre park between Groesbeck and Mexia in Limestone County, was deeded by private owners in 1936 and was rebuilt again in 1967. The original construction of the park was by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). It is now managed by the City of Groesbeck. It was the site of the abduction of Cynthia Ann Parker (mother of Quanah Parker) on May 19, 1836, by Comanche Indians.
